Faithful Nest

Living faithful in a faithless world

Purpose

My latest fetish is a dead poet, but a Nobel Prize winning talent. I cannot begin to tell you the rabbit trail that has led me here. I do know that I was enflamed by his piece read by President Biden in an October 2020 campaign video. It was from The Cure at Troy.

Seamus Heaney has interpreted several ancient pieces. I possess one edition of his translation of Beowulf. Don’t let that deter you. He has the Irish gift of beautiful words and translating the feeling of the moment. He has his own more current work which enlightens and entertains.

Blah, blah, blah. I’m sorry, Tim.

My purpose here is to introduce his Nobel Prize speech. For a speech, he has crafted a feeling and expressive piece. It leads you to his inspiring conclusion – in which he addresses our purpose. Would you expect anything less of one who is accepting a Nobel Prize for Literature?

You can find it here: https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/1995/heaney/lecture/
I hope you find the time to sit with a libation (coffee, whatever) and wander through a historic purview of the place and purpose of poetry and art.
